The announcement stated that this came about as a result of feedback from the community, but many people suspect it's the low pre-order numbers that had prompted this change.
It doesn't affect me at all since I never planned to join the Xbox family anyway, but good news for those who do. This drastic change surely would make Microsoft a laughing stock, but it's probably better than losing customers.
In the mean time, I patiently await for my shopping trip, which will determine whether I get a 3DS or a Vita for Christmas this year...
