Black label ice cream

I typically stick with the tried and true Green Tea & Honey Häagen-Dazs for my ice cream fix, but occasionally I venture out (and sometimes regret after the first bite) when I see interesting or new flavours.

Not too long ago, black label ice cream started to appear in my local grocers, coming in four flavours: Madagascar Bourbon vanilla, salted caramel, passion fruit, and coffee.

Yes, I tried all four, and here's the verdict.

Madagascar Bourbon vanilla is very rich and creamy, but a bit too rich and creamy for me. I can only have a few spoonfuls at a time, so it'll take me quite a while to finish this.

Salted caramel is, according to Neko-tan, a new flavour that started popping up recently. It's very rich and buttery, but also very salty. I've had to raise a white flag after one or two spoonfuls every time I attempted the challenge. Seriously looking for some other ways to use this other than eating straight...

Passion fruit is also on the rich and creamy side, but at the same time refreshing due to the passion fruit flavour. It's actually not bad at all once you get used to the sweetness mixed with the fruity sourness. Already finished the tub and will likely get more in the future when it goes on sale.

Tried coffee just now. It's, again, a bit on the rich and creamy side, but it tastes just like those Japanese charcoal-roasted coffee candies I used to eat! I'm not a coffee-drinker so I can't tell whether the coffee taste is considered good or meh, but this is not bad. It'll probably take me another four or five sittings to finish the tub, but I might get it again in the future if I feel like it.

On a side note to self, avoid Chapman and Bryers at all cost!

トロ・ステーション 第122回

It's another week of Toro Station!

The first part of vol.122 features Kuro and Toro taking a three-day train trip to Hokkaido. They started with the Hokutosei(北斗星) train, which departs Ueno at 1900 and arrives at Sapporo at 1100. The meal car also provides French cuisine, which requires a reservation at least 3 days prior. For people who don't reserve for special cuisine, there's a limited-seat bar time that serves hamburgers (which also looks good).

The two felines cruised around Hokkaido on four different train routes, tasting mouth-watering local dishes such as lamb Genghis Khan(ジンギスカン) and Kattedon(勝手丼). Of course, there's also the famous train lunch boxes(駅弁). どれもすっごく美味しそう!北海道に行きたい~~

Other than food, there's also views as seen from the trains, including Japanese cranes and drift ice. The trains were also some spectacles themselves as well.

The second part of vol.122 talks about an entry in the PS Store Game Archives section: 悪魔城ドラキュラX 月下の夜想曲 (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night). The only Castlevania game I've ever played was a Famicom one, maybe the first one. Symphony of the Night is apparently one of the best games in the series, and the play system seems to offer a variety of play styles in addition to the RPG-like levels. One of those games I'd want to play someday~ (and no, I can't buy anything off the PS Store 'cause they don't take overseas credit cards. orz)

Last week's Toro Station reviewed another game that I'd want to play: Tales of the Heroes Twin Brave (PSP). It's basically a hack and slash type of game featuring two characters from each and all Tales series. For each character, there's also a serious route and a comical route. I only know some of the Tales series from anime, but I'd definitely want to know more about the franchise and the various characters! This one is on my (extremely long) wish list for games~

On a side note, I get an error message when trying to log into the PSN today. Hopefully this gets fixed before next week's Toro Station. :(

40% acl/vol

As a result of a fridge issue at a certain feline meat's place, I got a bottle of brandy. Since I don't drink, I decided to use it for cooking.

My 1st alcoholic(?) dish: drunken chicken drumsticks

The only experiences I have with the dish were the few instances in restaurants, so I didn't expect my vague attempt to be comparable. It was also my first time using the rice cooker for drumsticks, but I think it went really well. The drumsticks were fully cooked and tender, and the brandy wasn't too overwhelmingly strong. The dried wolfberries also added some sweetness to the taste.

It was only when I had pushed the start button on the rice cooker and was putting the brandy bottle back in the fridge, that I realized the thing said 40% acl/vol. Maybe next time I'll put in just a little bit less than what I put in today...

スライム肉まんがあらわれた!

The day that millions of DQ fans (in Japan) have been waiting for was finally here! The invasion of the blue slimes! ( ゚ ∀ ゚ )

Needless to say, related pictures and videos have popped up everywhere on the internet. Looking at them makes me want to have one even more! ・゚・(つд`)・゚・

However, beside the blue slime, there are other types of slimes in the game as well. So people have come up with clever ways to recreate them from the base slime.

I was quite impressed by the metal slime (but very weary of the edible spray...) and had to suppress my laughter when I saw the hoimi slime (at the office during lunch time). XD

On a side note, my slime has surpassed Saluki and reached lv.30, but still very very far from lv.99 (if I ever reach it). Bianca's announced pregnant so Saluki will likely become the father of the legendary Hero after he gets the throne back. If all goes well, maybe by this weekend. XD

紅茶入れってみた、を見ました

I am in the middle of viewing a past broadcast of 『Do★NICO!』ニコニコ本社で「やってみた」しよう! on Niconico, where they invite people to drop by the main office to dance or sing.

It was held at the TEA ROOM 2525 cafe inside the office building, and when there was no guest, they just grabbed some of the staff off the cafe floor to introduce them. Apparently, Niconico users are hired to work at the cafe, which provides them an environment to create their work as well.

And Nagare-san demonstrated how to make good tasting black tea from tea bags in very simple steps. XD

Here's how:
- Warm the tea cup. This makes sure there won't be a temperature drop for the tea (he had hot water in the cup and made sure the whole cup was warmed before dumping out the water).
- Puff up the tea bag to the point that the tea leaves "swim", as described fittingly by a user comment, freely inside the tea bag. This ensures that the flavour comes out nicely.
- Pour the hot water, then slowly put in the tea bag. This also helps to get the flavour out evenly (he later explained that if the tea bag is placed in first before pouring the hot water, the tea leaves might clump under the force and thus preventing all the flavour to come out).
- Cover the tea cup fully for roughly one minute. The time depends on the size and type of tea leaves; larger leaves may require up to one and a half minute, whereas smaller leaves would be good with one minute (he used a simple alarm to sound in one minute).
- Remove the cover and slowly take out the tea bag. The black tea should appear to be two layers in the tea cup.
- Gently stir the cup once with the tea spoon to mix up the tea.
- Et voilà!

Watching this kinda makes me wanna make my own tea bag black tea. Maybe I should go get some black tea and actually plug in my electric water kettle. XD

カレーの錬金術師

This isn't actually an experiment but more of an extension/improvement of the 2nd one.

Ingredients involved: curry, minced pork, carrot, blue berries, water, vanilla ice cream; yogourt drink

Steps:
- Pan fry the minced pork a bit so it's not in one giant meat ball
- Throw everything else into the pot and let boil in low heat
- Watch a few episodes of anime
- Add ice cream after everything was nicely mixed together
- Stir and done

Result: Success!

The overall taste is slightly on the sweet side, but not overpowering the curry. The 2nd experiment had grape tomatoes and therefore was a bit more sour. The two scoops of ice cream might had contributed to the flavour as well. XD

By the time I turned off the stove, the curry looked kinda thick. So I brought a small bottle of yogourt drink just in case and added it to the curry+rice lunch box before heating it up in the microwave.

Not only did it gave the rice a hint of flavour, it went very well with the blue berries. It was very good. :3

Although my cube-mate complained that my hybrid curry gave off a strange smell...

Unfortunately, that was the last of my blue berry stock so I won't be able to reproduce the recipe for a while. Unless I want to explore those PC frozen fruit bags...

On a side whim, I think I will give myself the title of Curry Alchemist (and changed the title of this post accordingly from Curry Experiment #4), since I like to play with different materials to make that pot of gold. XD

初Dr Pepper

This thing's been around for years, but it has typically been under the radar with so many more well known competitions. I had always wondered about its taste, but most people that tried it back in my high school days claimed it's for the eccentrics.

Apparently it tastes like Taiwanese (Asian?) cold syrups, so a lot of people from Taiwan dislike the drink.

But the drink has made its name in recent anime series, namely Steins;Gate and Kamisama no Memochou (and maybe the upcoming Persona 4), and anime fans around the world are drawn to pick up the drink.

I thought I'd give it a try as well when I spotted it today.

The first sip did kinda remind me of the cold syrups I used to smell but refused to take when I was little. But I got used to the smell and taste quickly after a few more sips.

It kinda lost its lustre after a few hours when it became lukewarm, and just went down like cherry-flavoured coke. Not as good as when it's still fresh, but it's somewhat unavoidable 'cause that's usually how long it takes for me to finish one can of pop...

All in all, I don't find it disgusting like my classmates used to describe it. I can see how some people would get addicted to its taste. While not quite your usual coke, the cherry flavour is still easy on the taste buds and even soothing at times.

On a side note, I scanned the can and noticed that the caffeine content was 41mg/355ml. According to Coca Cola's website and a quick calculation, the Classic is about 34mg/355ml. I don't drink coffee so I don't know how much those amount to, but I couldn't help but think that maybe the slightly higher caffeine content in Dr Pepper gives people more of a kick, and as a result leaves the impression that brain-using people run off it more?

Although I'm leaning toward the feelings I got back in my high school days, that people think it's for the eccentrics. Mad Scientist Hououin Kyouma and NEET Detective Alice should be proof enough. XD

ラムネ

I got a bottle of ramune last month but was only able to taste it today. Apparently the brand I got was a famous Taiwanese brand, so I was looking forward to trying it.

It took me a bit of time to figure out how to take off the pink opener, but I found the design quite clever.

Time to push the marble!

*bubble bubble bubble bubble*
AHHHH~~~~~ (gotta clean them off lest the ants appear)

うむ、うまい~( ゚ ∀ ゚ )

According to the label, the cap can be opened to take out the marble, but I was unsuccessful...

Then I saw the Wikipedia article mentioning the cap is reversed (clock-wise) to prevent people accidentally opening it.

Ramune bottle is defeated.
Ramune bottle dropped a ramune marble.
You picked up the ramune marble.

MUHAHAHA.

ガリガリ君、再び

I didn't realize that ガリガリ君 is such a national snack in Japan, that even a non-gag type series would have a parody of it as well.

Episode 10 of Ao no Exorcist revealed another sub-species of ガリガリ君, this time called ゴリゴリ君! XD

I didn't expect to shed so much tears watching that episode... T__T

いいスライム、食べなイカ?

Ever since the news announcement, this blue coloured gourmet has had a tight grip on my appetite.

While trying to appeal to a friend of this upcoming treat, I searched for "blue slime meat bun" on a certain world famous search engine and got this, which title asked the "but will you?" question. When we both saw the title of the article, we instinctively proclaimed, "Of course I will!" at the same time.

Then we proceeded to lament the fact that it's meat bun and therefore can't be brought back even if Friend-K will be in Japan when the item in question starts invading Family Marts. It really is too bad...

Friend-K! You are now assigned with the very important mission when you go to Japan! You are to go to Family Mart, acquire at least one of those blue slimes, take lots of photos of it, then bring back the memory of its taste to us! 絶対だからな!

ガリガリ君

Fans of the very awesome series Arakawa Under the BridgexBridge will recall the legendary treasure guarded by the Amazoness and the , ガリガリ様/Garigari-sama. I kinda figured it's a parody of something well known in Japan (from the Saitama Prefecture!), but didn't think I'd be able to actually try it.

Until today.

The "Samurai Blue" flavoured ice treat from Arakawa is based on ガリガリ君/Garigari-kun (from the Saitama Prefecture!). I have to say, it really is and in the mouth~

The website also has a section describing the manufacture process. The specialized ガリガリ君 machine can make 21,000 ガリガリ君 in one hour! That's enough ガリガリ君 to almost last a life time! XD

ギモーヴ

I was watching Blood-C ep.2 when these interesting looking pink squares appeared on screen. They looked sponge-like and resembled marshmallows, but I wanted to be sure.

Off to Wikipedia! XD

Turned out that ギモーヴ is Guimauve, which is the French word for the marshmallow plant (which is no longer used in the production of marshmallow as we know it).

For us North Americans, marshmallows usually are soft-edged, cylinder-like, and often white. So it was no wonder that my interest was piqued by the pink squares in the anime. A quick search will show you all the colours and flavours available in the land of the rising sun. I think we're missing out in the land of the maple tree.

There's a part in the article describing that when the Fuugetsudou store first manufactured and sold marshmallow in Japan back in 1892, it advertised it as 真珠麿, which kinda affixed "pearl" to the name and was a direct translation based on pronunciation (マシュマロ/mashuumaro). The first thing that came to my mind when I read this? 真朱/Mashuu and 公麿/Kimimaro from C. さすが親子~ XD

Thai Tea Ice Cream

Whenever I go to the Chinese supermarket, I always look for those delicious icy treats. Usually I aim for the Japanese or Taiwanese brands, but I decided to try a Thai brand.

The flavour on the box is stated to be Thai Tea, and there's two images on the lid, one for the flavour and one for the ice cream. The flavour one is pretty normal, just a glass of Thai tea. The ice cream one, on the other hand, looks like an ice cream version of pearl milk tea.

Out of curiosity (I seem to do this a lot, especially when it comes to food), I went with it without really knowing what Thai tea tastes like.

The ice cream really is milk tea flavoured, with pearls. XD

It ended up being my dinner last night as I was busying slashing and blasting through hordes of familiars and battling witches. Yes, I will cover the Tasogare Frontier game in the near future and share the downfalls of my .

カレー実験第三弾

Experiment #3: Berries & tuna curry

Ingredients: curry, blueberries, strawberries, carrots, water, milk, canned tuna

Steps:
- wash and cut up the berries and throw into pot with 1/3 water to medium heat
- throw in carrots and curry chunks, add milk
- add in canned tuna after 2 episodes
- slow cook for another 1 episode

Result: Success!

This was actually an extension of the food experiment from yesterday, where I stove cooked rice as if it's oat meal and added blueberries and strawberries. I didn't add enough honey for the first portion and it tasted sour and weird. Had to get help from shredded pork. The second portion kinda had a wee bit too much honey and tasted sweet and weird.

While eating, I remembered the minced pork curry with blueberries from last time. Sourberries Blueberries are better in curry than in rice.

The berries & tuna curry today is slightly sweet with a hint of berry sourness. The tuna adds more texture and protein to make it complete. In one word: 甘じょっぱい甘酸っぱい! (couldn't resist. Everytime I think of the word, I'm reminded of ドロッセル XD)

味噌豚足(料理中)

Since I already tried the regular soy sauce and the Japanese curry, I thought I'd try miso this time.

Unfortunately, I started too late tonight and it's not ready for consumption yet. I was hoping to bring it for lunch tomorrow... :(

Oh, well. I'll let it cook some more tomorrow and have it for dinner tomorrow! :D

Mmm... Miso pig feet... *yum* XD

Oh, and just to clear things up, I do not love pig feet to death. I cook it relatively often because it's the easiest meat soup dish to make in terms of preparation. No cutting, no need to watch the time so it doesn't harden. Just boil it to let out the blood, then slow cook it with whatever soup base and ingredients for a good couple hours.

Looking forward to actually tasting it tomorrow! :D

Experiment #2: Minced pork curry

Ingredients involved: curry, minced pork, carrot, blue berries (the left over sour berries from the purple rice porridge), grape tomatoes, water, yogourt drink

Steps:
- Pan fry the minced pork a bit so it's not in one giant meat ball
- Throw everything else into the pot and let boil in medium heat
- Watch a few episodes of anime
- Stir and done

Result: Success!

Since the pot was over 3/4 full with the raw materials before I even added water and curry, I thought one pack might not be enough, so I put in two packs of curry, with different degrees of spiciness.

The end result turned out rather well, although it was somewhat viscous because I didn't really have much room for water in the pot. That should be easily remedied with a small helping of yogourt drink before consumption.

There is just one little problem, however, with the curry. Unlike the blue berries which are soft skinned and blend well with the rest, the grape tomatoes still maintain their own and pack a sour punch when eaten. I find myself making a >x< face whenever I bite down on one. I think I'll refrain from using them as raw materials for curry in the future.
